The Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the province of Agusan del Sur in Mindanao, is one of the most ecologically significant wetland areas in the Philippines. This vast complex of freshwater marshes and watercourses covers an area roughly the size of Metro Manila. It serves as a massive flood basin for the Agusan River, absorbing excess water and mitigating flooding in downstream areas. The marsh is a designated Ramsar site, recognizing its international importance. It is a critical habitat for numerous species, including the endangered saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) and a vast number of migratory birds. The marsh is also home to indigenous Manobo communities who live in floating houses, adapting their lifestyle to the seasonal rise and fall of the water levels. The area holds a unique peat swamp forest, which is rare in the country.
