Panama Canal Administration Building
The Panama Canal Administration Building, inaugurated on July 15, 1914, serves as the primary headquarters for the management of one of the world's most significant engineering marvels. Located on a hill overlooking Balboa in Panama City, the H-shaped structure was designed by architect Austin W. Lord to centralize canal operations as the construction phase neared completion. One of its most distinctive features is the rotunda decorated with four massive murals by William B. Van Ingen, which depict the heroic efforts and various stages of the canal's excavation. These paintings, covering approximately 1,000 square feet, provide a visual history of the locks, Culebra Cut, and Gatun Dam. Today, the building continues to house the offices of the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) and remains a symbol of Panamanian sovereignty over the waterway since the 1999 handover. Its neoclassical architecture and manicured grounds make it a prominent landmark for both officials and visitors interested in maritime history.
