Cerro Patacón (Panama)

Weather…

Cerro Patacón is a hill north of Panama City, best known for the massive landfill at its base. The hill itself plays an important role in the local environment, although the proximity of the landfill poses serious environmental challenges. The hill and its surroundings were originally covered by tropical rainforest, remnants of which can still be found on the steeper slopes. These forest patches provide important refuge for local wildlife. The hill is located in the buffer zone of the Panama Canal watershed. The name Cerro Patacón also appears in Panamanian folklore and has, in modern times, become a symbol of environmental pollution and urban sprawl. Efforts are being made to mitigate the environmental impact of the landfill and to rehabilitate the surrounding areas.
