The Pearl Islands (Archipiélago de las Perlas) in the Gulf of Panama consist of over 200 islands and islets. Saboga and Isla del Rey are among the archipelago's most significant. Isla del Rey is the largest island and home to several small villages, while Saboga is known for its more exclusive atmosphere and pristine beaches. The name dates back to the colonial era when pearls were found here in abundance for the Spanish crown. Nature is the greatest asset of these islands: turquoise water, white sand, and rich marine flora and fauna make them a hotspot for snorkelers and divers. A special highlight is the annual humpback whale migration from July to October. Away from the capital's bustle, you'll find a tranquility here that has served as the backdrop for several seasons of the 'Survivor' TV series. The islands offer a mix of simple island living and luxurious retreats. Access is easy via ferry from Panama City (approx. 1.5 to 2 hours) or by domestic flight. Gastronomically, everything revolves around seafood, with lobster and fresh snapper being particularly recommended. The best time to visit is from December to April for sunny beach weather, and from July to October for nature enthusiasts wanting to spot whales. It is the ultimate retreat for island fans and nature photographers.
