Metropolitan Cathedral of Panama (Panama)

Weather…

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Montevideo, officially the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, St. Philip and St. James, is the main church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Montevideo. It is located on Plaza Matriz, the historic heart of the Old City (Ciudad Vieja). The cornerstone of the current neoclassical building was laid in 1790, and it was consecrated in 1804, though construction continued. It replaced a more modest church from the mid-18th century. The architects involved in its design included Tomás Toribio and later Bernardo Poncini, who modified the facade. Inside, the cathedral houses the tombs of several prominent figures in Uruguayan history, including Fructuoso Rivera, the first president of Uruguay, and the priest and scientist Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga. The cathedral was elevated to the rank of minor basilica by Pope Leo XIII in 1897 and has been a National Historic Monument since 1975.
