Owo Palace (Nigeria)

Weather…

The Palace of the Olowo of Owo, located in Ondo State, is widely regarded as the largest traditional palace complex in Africa and a prime example of Yoruba architectural heritage. Spanning over 44 hectares of land, the palace features more than 100 courtyards (known as Ughas), each designated for specific ceremonial, administrative, or private functions. The foundation of the palace dates back to approximately 1340 AD during the reign of Olowo Ojugbelu. The architecture is notable for its intricately carved wooden pillars and floors paved with quartz pebbles, reflecting the unique artistic traditions of the Owo kingdom. It remains the official residence of the traditional ruler and serves as the epicenter for the famous annual Igogo festival. Due to its historical scale and architectural significance, the Nigerian government has designated it a national monument. The palace continues to preserve centuries-old monarchical traditions and serves as a living museum of Owo history.
