Independence House Lagos (Nigeria)

Weather…

Independence House in Lagos, also known as the Defence House, is a historically significant skyscraper built in 1960 as a gift from the British government to commemorate Nigeria's independence. Standing 25 stories high at approximately 103 meters, it was Nigeria's first high-rise building and a potent symbol of the country's new-found sovereignty. The building is located near Tafawa Balewa Square on Lagos Island and has been a prominent feature of the city's skyline for over six decades. Its International Style architecture is characterized by functionalism and clean lines, typical of the early 1960s urban aesthetic. Throughout its history, it housed various government departments, most notably the Ministry of Defence, before many federal functions were relocated to Abuja. Despite suffering a major fire in 1993, the structural integrity of the building remained intact, and it is currently slated for extensive renovation and repurposing. As a monument to national history, it remains a landmark of Nigeria's transition to a sovereign state.
