Anambra Forest Reserve

The Anambra Forest Reserve, notably the Akpaka area near Onitsha, is a vital ecological sanctuary in southeastern Nigeria. Spanning approximately 300 hectares, the reserve serves as a "green lung" for the densely populated region along the banks of the Niger River. It was initially established in the 1930s during the colonial era to prevent soil erosion and protect valuable timber species. Today, it hosts a variety of tree species, including teak and Gmelina, as well as numerous bird species and small mammals. Despite increasing urbanization, it remains a crucial corridor for local biodiversity and provides a site for forestry research. In recent years, there have been intensified efforts to combat illegal logging and preserve the ecosystem for future generations.
