Rivière Bleue Provincial Park (New Caledonia)

Weather…

Rivière Bleue Provincial Park is a sprawling 9,000-hectare nature reserve located in the South Province of New Caledonia, near the town of Yaté. It is one of the premier ecological destinations on Grande Terre, known for its extraordinary mix of landscapes and endemic species. The park is the most significant sanctuary for the Cagou (Rhynochetos jubatus), New Caledonia's flightless national bird, which is protected within these dense forests. A major visual highlight is the 'Drowned Forest' (Forêt Noyée), where the bleached, skeletal trunks of ancient trees stand preserved in the blue-green waters of the Yaté reservoir. The park is also home to the 'Grand Kaori' tree, a majestic Agathis lanceolata estimated to be over 1,000 years old, boasting a massive nine-meter circumference. The terrain is defined by its striking red soil, rich in nickel and iron, which provides a vivid backdrop for the unique scrubland and rainforest vegetation. With an extensive network of hiking and cycling trails, as well as opportunities for kayaking down the Blue River itself, the park provides a deep immersion into the ancient natural heritage of the archipelago.
