Mont Dzumac
Mont Dzumac is a prominent mountain massif situated in the southern part of Grande Terre, New Caledonia's main island. Rising to an elevation of approximately 1,250 meters, it serves as a critical ecological cornerstone and a primary watershed for the southern region. The mountain is the source of several major rivers that are essential for the island's fresh water supply. Geologically, the massif is characterized by its ultramafic rock formations and mineral-rich red laterite soils, which are heavy in nickel and iron deposits typical of the region. Botanically, Mont Dzumac is a haven of evolution; its cloud-shrouded ridges are home to a diverse array of micro-endemic plant species that exist nowhere else on Earth. For hikers, the rugged and often treacherous terrain has a formidable challenge, but the reward is a series of wide-open panoramic vistas over the southern plains and lush valleys below. Due to its vital role in water conservation and its unique biodiversity, much of the area is under strict environmental protection to safeguard its pristine springs and rare floral communities.
