The Casino Plateau, historically known as 'Les Spélugues,' is an artificially refined rocky plateau that crowns the Monte Carlo district. The original relief was a barren limestone eminence interspersed with caves before it was leveled in the 19th century for the construction of the Monte Carlo Casino and transformed into a magnificent garden landscape. Today, the relief is characterized by a combination of urban splendor and careful landscape architecture, with the Jardins du Casino masking topographical transitions. Geologically, the plateau rests on a solid limestone base that allowed for the construction of monumental structures such as the Opéra de Monte-Carlo. Its strategic location has a panoramic view over Port Hercule and is the heart of luxury life in the Principality. The gradient around the plateau is crucial for the demanding section of the Formula 1 circuit that passes directly by the Casino.
