Zacatecas Cathedral (Mexico)

Weather…

The Cathedral of Zacatecas, dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption, is a prime example of the Churrigueresque style, an ornate form of Mexican Baroque. Construction of the current structure began in 1729 on the site of earlier churches and was largely completed by 1752, though the towers reached their final form much later. The main facade is carved from the region's characteristic pink cantera stone and is celebrated for its extraordinary level of detail, featuring intricate biblical scenes and statues of saints. This architectural richness reflects the immense wealth produced by the local silver mines during the 18th century. In contrast to the exterior, the interior is relatively austere today, as much of its original gold-leaf ornamentation was lost during the 19th-century Reform Wars. The cathedral remains the centerpiece of Zacatecas' historic district, which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993.
