León, officially known as León de los Aldama, is located in the state of Guanajuato and is world-renowned as the 'Shoe Capital of the World.' Founded in 1576, the city has evolved into the most important industrial center in the Bajío region, producing over 70 percent of all footwear manufactured in Mexico. The historic center features the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Light, a magnificent 19th-century religious structure. An iconic landmark is the Triumphal Arch of the Lion (Arco de la Calzada), built in 1883, which stands at the entrance to the historic district. Every November, the city hosts the International Balloon Festival, one of the largest events of its kind globally, held at the Metropolitan Park. León is also a significant hub for leather goods, home to numerous specialized markets and shopping centers. Its modern infrastructure and strong economic growth have made it one of the most populous and dynamic metropolitan areas in central Mexico.
