Ensenada is a prominent coastal city in Baja California, located on the shores of Todos Santos Bay about 110 kilometers south of the United States border. It is officially known as 'The Cinderella of the Pacific' and serves as a vital seaport for commercial shipping, fishing, and luxury cruise liners. The city is the gateway to the Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico's premier wine-growing region, which produces nearly 90% of the country's wine. Ensenada is also an important center for scientific research, housing institutions like CICESE and the UNAM Institute of Astronomy, which operates the National Astronomical Observatory. Marine tourism is a major draw, particularly the 'La Bufadora' sea geyser and seasonal gray whale watching in the surrounding waters. Historically, the city was the first capital of the Baja California territory before the seat of government was moved to Mexicali. It is also famous for hosting the legendary Baja 1000 off-road race.
