Coin de Mire (Gunner's Quoin) (Mauritius)

Weather…

Coin de Mire, also known as Gunner's Quoin, is a prominent islet off the northern coast of Mauritius, situated about 4.5 kilometers from Cap Malheureux. The island is of volcanic origin, characterized by steep basaltic cliffs that reach an elevation of 158 meters at their highest point. Geologically, it is a remnant of the volcanic activity that shaped the northern plateau of Mauritius. Historically, the island served as a navigational landmark for the British fleet during the invasion of Mauritius in 1810. Today, Coin de Mire is a designated state nature reserve, and landing on the island is prohibited to protect its endangered wildlife. The cliffs are a major nesting site for the Red-tailed Tropicbird (Paille-en-Queue). The surrounding waters contain significant coral formations and host a rich marine biodiversity. Due to its striking wedge shape, the island is a widely visible landmark of the north and a central element of the Mauritian maritime landscape.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
This striking rocky islet is primarily observed from the decks of commercial catamaran cruises departing from the northern coastal towns. Disembarking onto the actual island is broadly restricted, as it operates strictly as a highly protected nature reserve.
📅
Best season
The drier and relatively cooler months from May through November consistently offer the most reliable conditions for boat tours. During the active cyclone season, rough, unpredictable seas frequently cause the cancellation of all nearby marine excursions.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
From the water, visitors clearly witness a dramatically tilted volcanic block featuring immense, sheer sea cliffs on one side. The terrain above is extremely hostile and precipitous, providing a handy, isolated habitat for nesting native seabirds.
🎒
What to bring
Since the primary mode of experiencing this location is via boat deck, a high-quality camera and binoculars for birdwatching are the best tools. Motion sickness medication is also highly recommended for individuals prone to discomfort on rolling waves.
🅿️
Parking
Tourists invariably leave their rented vehicles in designated coastal parking areas near the prominent departure marinas of the mainland. Finding secure parking is usually a very straightforward process incorporated directly into the boat tour logistics.
⚠️
Safety
The most prominent safety concern revolves strictly around standard maritime hazards, particularly the risk of rough surface waters causing the vessel to sway. Passengers are universally urged to pay close attention to the safety briefings provided by the crew.
⏱️
Time needed
Cruising closely past the island to admire its shape and wildlife is typically featured as a brief, spectacular segment of a much broader full-day marine tour. The specific time spent near the impressive cliffs usually amounts to just under an hour.
