Merdeka Stadium
Merdeka Stadium is a remarkable feature of the geography and culture of Malaysia. The historic site where the Federation of Malaya's Declaration of Independence was officially proclaimed on 31 August 1957. 'Merdeka' means 'Independent' in Malay. It was the venue for many major sporting events, including the Merdeka Tournament. Received the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award in 2008. This site holds particular significance in the history of Malaysia, from the Malacca Sultanate through British colonial rule to independence in 1957.
