Royal Belum State Park is a remarkable feature of the geography and culture of Malaysia. A huge park of pristine rainforest older than the Amazon, home to all 10 of Malaysia's hornbill species and the rare Rafflesia flower. Part of the Belum-Temengor Forest Complex. Over 130 million-year-old forest. Home to elephants, tigers, and tapirs. This protected area is part of Malaysia's rich wildlife and flora, with tropical rainforests, orangutans, hornbills and mangrove coastlines. Like many notable places in Malaysia, it combines regional character with the legacy of the multicultural Malay-Chinese-Indian society and the tropics. Getting there
The gateway to the park is Pulau Banding, reachable via the East-West Highway. From the public jetty, visitors must arrange licensed boat transfers to journey deeper into the sprawling rainforest reserve.
Best season
The drier months from March to August offer the most favorable trekking conditions. However, wildlife viewing and chances to see the blooming Rafflesia can sometimes be better during the transitional wet seasons.
Terrain & paths
The park is characterized by ancient, dense tropical rainforest, steep inland hills, and a vast man-made lake. Trails can be heavily overgrown, muddy, and require navigating through thick vegetation and stream crossings.
What to bring
Lightweight, long-sleeved clothing, high-quality leech socks, and sturdy jungle trekking shoes are mandatory. Bring a waterproof dry bag for electronics, ample insect repellent, and plenty of filtered drinking water.
Parking
Secure parking is widely available at the public jetty complexes and major resorts around Pulau Banding. Vehicles are safely left behind here as all onward travel into the protected park is conducted by boat.
Safety
Entry requires arranging a valid permit in advance. Always trek with a certified nature guide due to the extremely dense forest canopy, the presence of wild elephants, and the high likelihood of encountering leeches.
Time needed
A comprehensive visit typically spans two to three days, often involving overnight stays in basic jungle camps or houseboat accommodations to fully experience the immense biodiversity and remote environment.
