Al-Kufra Basin (Libya)

Weather…

The Kufra Basin in southeastern Libya is one of the most significant agricultural development areas in the Sahara, relying on vast fossil water resources. The basin houses the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer, the largest known fossil groundwater system in the world, which was recharged during wetter climatic periods tens of thousands of years ago. In the 1970s, Libya launched major irrigation projects using center-pivot systems to create massive circular fields for grain and fodder in the heart of the desert. These distinctive green circles are clearly visible even from outer space. The Kufra Oasis was historically an important center for the Senussi order and a strategic hub for caravan trade between Chad and Egypt. Today, the basin is also a primary source for the 'Great Man-Made River' project, which transports water over thousands of kilometers to supply Libya's coastal cities.
