Benghazi Lighthouse
The Benghazi Lighthouse is a historic and iconic maritime structure located in the Sidi Khrebeish district of Benghazi. Built in 1922 during the Italian colonial rule, it was designed to guide vessels navigating the Mediterranean waters near the Cyrenaican coast. Standing approximately 22 meters tall, the lighthouse is famous for its distinctive black and white horizontal stripes, making it a prominent landmark visible from both sea and land. Interestingly, the lighthouse sits atop an archaeological site containing the ruins of the ancient Greek city of Berenice, blending modern colonial architecture with classical history. Throughout the decades, the lighthouse has survived numerous conflicts, most notably the Siege of Benghazi during World War II and the intense urban warfare between 2014 and 2017. While much of the surrounding neighborhood was destroyed, the lighthouse remained standing, becoming a symbol of resilience for the people of Benghazi. It continues to be a vital navigational aid and a testament to the city's long maritime heritage.
