Mount Nimba Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site spanning Liberia, Guinea, and Côte d'Ivoire, covers 17,540 hectares of pristine montane forest. The massif rises to 1,752 m and harbors exceptional endemism, including the viviparous toad Nimbaphrynoides occidentalis and the Nimba flycatcher. The reserve is a global biodiversity hotspot with over 500 endemic species, but it faces acute threats from iron ore mining operations by ArcelorMittal, which have encroached on buffer zones. Conservation efforts by NGOs focus on habitat restoration and anti-poaching patrols. The area receives up to 3,500 mm of rainfall annually. Local Manon communities practice traditional agroforestry around the reserve.
