Ajloun Forest Reserve

Ajloun Forest Reserve

The Ajloun Forest Reserve is a 13-square-kilometer nature reserve in northern Jordan. It was established in 1987 by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) to protect the region's endangered evergreen oak (Quercus calliprinos) forests. These forests were once widespread in Jordan but largely fell victim to deforestation. The reserve encompasses a hilly landscape with deep valleys and is characterized by a relatively humid and cool climate for Jordanian standards.

In addition to oaks, strawberry trees, pistachios, and wild olives also grow here. The vegetation provides a habitat for diverse wildlife. The reserve is particularly known for its successful reintroduction program for the threatened roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), which had been eradicated in the region. Wild boars, foxes, stone martens, and numerous bird species are also native here.

For visitors, the Ajloun Forest Reserve offers a well-developed network of hiking trails of various lengths and difficulty levels. From simple walks to multi-hour hikes through the wooded hills, there is something for everyone. The reserve also houses cabins and a campsite for overnight stays, as well as a soap and a biscuit workshop run by local women, supporting the local community.
