Tahara spans the majority of the Atsumi Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture and is a true paradise for nature lovers and sports enthusiasts. The city is particularly famous in the surfing community for 'Pacific Long Beach' (太平洋ロングビーチ), which attracts surfers from all over Japan with its consistent waves. For families and those seeking more relaxed swimming, Shiroya Beach (白谷海水浴場) has a safer environment with calm waters and excellent facilities for an excellent day by the sea. Scenically, Tahara is defined by Cape Irago at the western tip of the peninsula. The white Irago Lighthouse is a romantic landmark, providing panoramic views of Ise Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The region is also Japan's leading producer of melons; during summer, visitors can enjoy 'melon-picking' tours. The local gastronomy features exceptionally fresh seafood, especially clams and sashimi, served directly in the small fishing communities along the coast. Getting around Tahara is best done by car or bicycle along the coastal roads, which offer wide-open views. A highlight is taking the ferry from Irago Port to Toba, connecting the peninsula with the Ise-Shima region. The combination of agricultural bounty, world-class surf spots, and maritime romance makes Tahara an under-the-radar destination off the beaten path for those seeking authentic Japanese coastal life.
