Bastione di Malta

The Bastione di Malta is a striking historical watchtower along the Tyrrhenian coast in Calabria, near Lamezia Terme and Gizzeria Lido. Built around 1550, it was commissioned to defend the local territory against frequent raids by Saracen pirates. Its construction is historically linked to the Knights of Malta, who held significant influence in the region, and was part of the coastal defense system promoted by Spanish Viceroy Pedro de Toledo.

Featuring a sturdy, truncated-pyramid base topped with a more slender upper section, the Bastion stands as a well-preserved example of 16th-century military architecture. Its thick stone walls and strategic coastal positioning allowed lookouts to spot approaching pirate fleets and warn neighboring towers and inland settlements. For centuries, it played a vital role in safeguarding the Calabrian shores.

Today, the Bastione di Malta is recognized as an iconic landmark of the Lamezia Terme area. Visitors can admire the tower's imposing exterior and appreciate its historical significance.
