Jaffa Gate (Israel)

Weather…

Jaffa Gate is one of the eight main openings in the historic walls of Jerusalem's Old City, serving as the primary entrance from the west. It was constructed in 1538 under the direction of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent as part of the total restoration of the city's defenses. The gate's name is derived from the port of Jaffa, toward which the road starting from this point historically led. Its design features an L-shaped internal structure, a classic medieval defensive element intended to slow down invading forces. Directly adjacent to the gate is the Tower of David citadel, a prominent fortress that now houses a museum. In 1898, a portion of the wall next to the gate was breached to allow German Emperor Wilhelm II to enter the city by carriage. Today, Jaffa Gate remains a bustling hub where the Christian and Armenian quarters meet the modern neighborhoods of West Jerusalem.
