Dome of the Rock (Israel)

Weather…

The Dome of the Rock is a monumental Islamic shrine located on the Temple Mount in the Old City of Jerusalem, serving as one of the region's most iconic landmarks. Built between 688 and 691 CE under the Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik, it stands as the oldest extant Islamic building in the world. The structure is characterized by its octagonal plan and its striking golden dome, which dominates the city's skyline. At the center of the shrine lies the Foundation Stone, which holds immense religious significance in both Judaism and Islam. Its architecture incorporates Byzantine design elements, featuring intricate mosaics and Arabic calligraphy that adorn both the interior and exterior walls. Since 1981, the Dome of the Rock has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Old City. It has undergone several renovations over the centuries, including the major regilding of the dome in the 1990s funded by Jordan. Today, it remains a focal point of religious devotion and architectural study.
