Castletownbere (Irish: Baile Chaisleáin Bhéarra) is the principal town on the wild Beara Peninsula in West Cork. As one of Ireland's five major fishing ports, it has an authentic coastal experience away from the heavy tourist crowds. Sheltered by Bere Island, it provides one of the deepest natural harbors in the world. Visitors should explore Dunboy Castle and the ruins of Puxley Mansion, which chronicle the turbulent history of the O'Sullivan Bere clan. Another highlight is Dzogchen Beara, a Buddhist meditation center perched on the cliffs west of the town, renowned for its tranquility and spectacular ocean views. The famous 'Beara Way' walking trail passes directly through the town, offering routes for all abilities. Local gastronomy is centered entirely on seafood; nowhere else are langoustines and monkfish fresher. In local pubs, like the renowned McCarthy's Bar, you'll encounter real sailors and locals. Castletownbere is the excellent base for reaching the Dursey Island Cable Car (Ireland's only cable car) located at the western tip of the peninsula.
