Ampera Bridge (Indonesia)

Weather…

The Ampera Bridge is the iconic landmark of Palembang, the capital of South Sumatra, spanning the Musi River to connect the districts of Seberang Ulu and Seberang Ilir. Construction of the bridge began in April 1962, funded largely by Japanese war reparations. Measuring 1,177 meters in length and 22 meters in width, it was officially opened in 1965 and was initially named the Bung Karno Bridge after Indonesia's first president. Following political shifts, it was renamed Ampera, an acronym for Amanat Penderitaan Rakyat, meaning Mandate of the People's Suffering. At the time of its completion, it was a vertical-lift bridge, featuring a central section that could be raised to allow large ships to pass through. However, the lifting mechanism has been inactive since 1970 because the process took too long and disrupted the growing city traffic. Today, the Ampera Bridge remains a vital transport link and an animated social hub, especially when illuminated at night.
