Bunaken National Marine Park (Indonesia)

Weather…

Bunaken National Marine Park is located off the coast of North Sulawesi near Manado and is one of Indonesia's most famous marine reserves. The park covers an area of nearly 900 square kilometers, 97% of which is clear tropical water. Bunaken is renowned for its spectacular vertical coral walls that drop steeply to depths of over 1,000 meters, hosting an incredible variety of marine life. Over 390 species of coral and thousands of fish species, including sea turtles, reef sharks, and occasionally dugongs, can be found here. Its location near the Wallace Line contributes to its high biological diversity. Established in 1991 as one of Indonesia's first national parks, it is a global premier destination for divers and snorkelers. Despite protection, the area faces threats from water pollution and rising sea temperatures.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The marine park is typically accessed by boat departing from the coastal city of Manado. Local dive operators and chartered vessels provide regular daily transfers to the islands.
📅
Best season
The dry season, typically from May to October, generally provides the best underwater visibility and calm seas. The rainy season often brings rougher surface conditions and reduced clarity.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The underwater terrain features spectacular vertical coral walls, animated reef ecosystems, and deep trenches. The terrestrial parts consist of small tropical islands fringed by mangroves.
🎒
What to bring
Snorkeling or scuba diving equipment is absolutely essential to explore the rich marine life. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a protective rash guard, and standard tropical beachwear.
🅿️
Parking
There are no roads or vehicles within the marine park itself; cars must be left in Manado. Secure parking is generally available at mainland hotels or near the main departure harbor.
⚠️
Safety
Pay strict attention to strong and unpredictable ocean currents along the underwater walls. Always participate in water activities with certified local guides who know the conditions.
⏱️
Time needed
A standard excursion generally requires a full day to properly enjoy the snorkeling spots and island views. Dedicated diving enthusiasts often base themselves on the islands for several days.
