Konark Sun Temple (India)

Weather…

The Konark Sun Temple on the coast of Odisha is a monumental masterpiece of 13th-century Kalinga architecture. Built around 1250 CE during the reign of King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty, it is dedicated to the sun god Surya. The entire temple is designed as a colossal celestial chariot pulled by seven galloping horses and resting on 24 intricately carved stone wheels. Each wheel is approximately three meters in diameter and functions as a sophisticated sundial, capable of indicating time with remarkable precision. The temple's exterior is adorned with thousands of relief sculptures ranging from mythological deities and erotic figures to scenes of royal hunts and daily life. While much of the original 70-meter main sanctum tower has collapsed over time, the surviving Jagamohana (audience hall) still showcases the sheer scale of the vision. Historically known by European sailors as the 'Black Pagoda', the site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 for its unique architectural composition and artistic brilliance.
