Aga Khan Palace

Aga Khan Palace

The Aga Khan Palace, located in Pune, India, is a majestic monument built in 1892 by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III. Originally constructed to provide employment to the famine-struck villagers of the surrounding region, it stands as an architectural marvel with Italian arches and spacious lawns. The palace holds immense historical significance in India's struggle for independence. Following the launch of the Quit India Movement in 1942, it served as a prison for Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi, his secretary Mahadev Desai, and Sarojini Naidu. Tragically, both Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai breathed their last on these premises, and their memorials (samadhis) are located within the palace grounds. Today, the Aga Khan Palace functions as the Gandhi National Memorial, housing a museum that displays personal belongings, photographs, and letters of Mahatma Gandhi, offering visitors a poignant glimpse into the nation's history.
