Morne La Visite is one of Haiti's highest peaks and the centerpiece of the La Visite National Park within the Chaîne de la Selle range. Standing at approximately 2,270 meters, the mountain features a cool, often misty climate that has fostered a truly unique ecosystem. It is home to significant stands of the Hispaniolan pine and remnants of high-altitude cloud forests. Morne La Visite serves as a critical habitat for several endangered species, most notably the rare Black-capped Petrel. The rugged limestone terrain and steep escarpments provide a dramatic landscape, which is unfortunately threatened by overgrazing and unregulated logging. Safeguarding this high-altitude plateau is of national importance, as it acts as a primary watershed for both the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area and the southeastern coastline.

Getting there

Reaching the national park requires a brutal, demanding drive on heavily degraded mountain trails starting from the Port-au-Prince region. Only the most capable 4x4 vehicles driven by experienced drivers can navigate these rugged ascents.

Plan your trek between late December and early March, which is the dry and cool winter window. During the rainy season, the rudimentary dirt tracks dissolve into deep mud, making the park entirely inaccessible by vehicle.

Terrain & paths

The hike features challenging elevation gains through rare Caribbean pine forests and over jagged limestone karsts. Trails are often narrow, deeply eroded, and confusingly crisscrossed by local rural transit paths.

What to bring

Complete wilderness hiking gear is required, including ankle-supporting boots, trekking poles, and warm clothing for cold, foggy nights. You must bring all provisions, including a water filtration system and first-aid supplies.

Cars are typically left at the Seguin settlement or a designated park guard station at the plateau edge. Always coordinate with park rangers or a hired local guide to secure a safe place for your vehicle during your stay.

A proper visit usually requires an overnight camping trip or a stay in a basic local guesthouse to make the rough journey worthwhile. The hike to the main peaks from the plateau base takes several hours each way.
