Habitation Mornay (Haiti)

Weather…

Habitation Mornay was one of the most prosperous plantations in the Artibonite region during the 18th-century French colonial period. It was renowned for its high-quality coffee production and occupied a vast area that included numerous buildings for processing and storing the harvest. Its geographic location at the foot of the mountains provided convenient climatic conditions for coffee cultivation, making the estate an economic powerhouse of the colony. During the turmoil of the Haitian Revolution, the property became a focal point of resistance, with the plantation's enslaved community taking an active role in the fight against French planters. The ruins of Habitation Mornay still reveal the grandeur of the former manor houses in contrast to the functional quarters. Historically, this site is of great significance as it illustrates the harsh realities of the plantation economy and the indomitable will for freedom of the Haitian people.
