Skopelos Town, also known as Chora, is widely considered one of Greece's most easy on the eye harbor towns and was designated a traditional settlement of outstanding beauty by presidential decree in 1978. The town rises amphitheatrically from the bay up to the ruins of a 13th-century Venetian fortress. The architecture is a diverse blend of styles, including Macedonian and neoclassical influences, featuring narrow white houses with gray slate or red tiled roofs. Chora is home to over 120 churches, most notably Panagitsa tou Pyrgou, which sits atop a rock at the edge of the harbor. Historically, the town was renowned for its shipbuilding industry and the export of local wine and olive oil. The narrow, flowering alleys lead to small squares shaded by massive plane trees. Today, the town remains a bustling cultural center with numerous craft shops producing traditional ceramics and woodcarvings. Despite its increasing popularity, Skopelos Town maintains a relaxed and authentic atmosphere.
