Mount Zas (Greece)

Weather…

Mount Zas (or Zeus) is the highest peak on the island of Naxos and, at 1,004 meters, the highest point in the entire Cyclades archipelago. Its name is directly derived from Zeus, the king of the gods, who according to Greek mythology was raised in a cave located on the mountain's slopes. This cavern, known as the Cave of Zas, features impressive stalactites and stalagmites and has provided archaeological evidence of human habitation dating back to the Neolithic era. Geographically, the mountain massif dominates the central and southern parts of Naxos, composed primarily of high-quality marble and schist, giving it a distinctive bright appearance. The hike to the summit is one of the most famous trails in the Aegean, passing by the Aria Spring and offering expansive panoramic views of nearby islands such as Paros, Ios, and Amorgos. The mountain's ecosystem is typically Mediterranean, hosting various endemic plant species and rare birds of prey that nest in its cliffs.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The highest mountain of the Cyclades on the island of Naxos is most commonly accessed via the traditional village of Filoti. From there, short connecting roads predictably lead to the well-known starting points of the main hiking trails.
📅
Best season
Spring and autumn consistently offer comfortably mild temperatures and beautifully blooming flora. Summer hikes, while perfectly possible, must strictly be started very early in the cool morning to beat the extremely intense midday sun.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The paths are largely very stony, completely dry, and uneven, paired with a remarkably consistent and sometimes steep incline directly towards the summit. The terrain is quite barren, showcasing a definitively rugged island-alpine character.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy, completely closed walking shoes are crucially important due to the sharp rocks. Furthermore, a wide-brimmed hat, strong sunscreen, and a very generous supply of drinking water are absolutely essential as there are no upper springs.
🅿️
Parking
Small parking areas can reliably be found right near the Aria Spring or slightly further down in the village of Filoti before the actual trail starts. In the hot summer months, arriving early is highly recommended to easily secure a spot.
⚠️
Safety
The intensely burning summer sun is by far the greatest danger here, as there is absolutely almost no shade along the entire path. Severe dehydration and heatstroke are very real risks that strictly must be avoided by drinking sufficiently.
⏱️
Time needed
A standard round trip to the prominent peak of this impressive island mountain takes roughly three to four hours at a completely normal walking pace. Additional breaks strictly for enjoying the vast panoramic views should ideally be planned.
