Mount Hymettus stretches east of Athens, serving as a natural boundary between the city center and the Mesogeia plain. Reaching an elevation of 1,026 meters at its highest peak, Evzonas, it is a prominent landmark of the Attica landscape. Since antiquity, the mountain has been celebrated for its distinctive honey and its bluish-gray marble, which was widely used in classical monuments and sculptures. Hymettus is home to over 600 plant species, including many rare wild orchids, making it one of the most biodiverse areas in close proximity to a major capital. A cultural highlight is the 11th-century Kaisariani Monastery, set in a lush forested area on the western slopes. Geologically, the mountain consists mainly of limestone and schist, leading to the formation of several notable caves, such as the Lion Cave. Despite being surrounded by an urban sprawl, Hymettus gives an extensive network of trails for hiking and nature study. Currently, the majority of the mountain is under environmental protection to safeguard its unique flora and numerous historical sites from further development.
