Preveli Beach
Preveli Beach, located on the southern coast of Crete, is arguably one of the most iconic and visually stunning beaches in Greece. What makes this place truly unique is the Megalopotamos river, which flows through a lush, exotic palm forest before emptying into the Libyan Sea. The contrast between the rugged canyon, the bright green palm trees, and the deep blue ocean creates an almost tropical oasis vibe that captivates every visitor.
Walking through the second-largest palm forest in Crete is an adventure in itself, feeling like a step into a different world. The beach at the end of the gorge forms a beautiful lagoon where you can swim in both the salty sea and the cool, refreshing freshwater of the river. The famous heart-shaped rock standing in the sea just off the coast adds to the incredibly romantic and picturesque scenery.
Reaching the beach requires a bit of effort, with a steep descent from the cliffs above, but the breathtaking panoramic views along the way make it more than worthwhile. Thanks to its status as a protected natural area, Preveli has maintained its wild, unspoiled charm without massive resorts or rows of sunbeds, offering a pristine and authentic Cretan experience.
