Mole National Park is Ghana's largest and oldest wildlife reserve, located in the Savannah Region. It is a magnet for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, offering one of the most affordable safari experiences in Africa. The highlight of the park is its large populations of African elephants, which are often spotted bathing in the watering holes located just below the main visitor center. Unlike many other African parks, Mole provides the unique opportunity to go on guided walking safaris with armed rangers, allowing visitors to get remarkably close to antelopes, baboons, warthogs, and countless bird species. The landscape is defined by vast open savannahs and gallery forests. Nearby is the historic Larabanga Mosque, the oldest mosque in Ghana, making for a great cultural detour. The park is best accessed from the northern city of Tamale, either by renting a 4x4 vehicle or taking public buses. The absolute best time for wildlife viewing is during the dry season from December to April, as animals congregate around the few remaining water sources and the sparse vegetation allows for much better visibility.
