Weißenthurm takes its name from a prominent 14th-century white customs tower that once marked the border between the Electorates of Trier and Cologne. Strategically positioned on the Rhine, the town evolved into a major industrial center during the 20th century, with aluminum processing and the beverage industry becoming economic mainstays. A site of great historical importance is the monumental tomb and memorial for the French General Lazare Hoche, commemorating the strategic Rhine crossing of French revolutionary troops in 1797. The town is linked to Neuwied on the opposite bank by the massive Raiffeisen Bridge, making it a crucial traffic hub in the Neuwied Basin. Despite its industrial character, Weißenthurm features scenic leisure areas along its Rhine promenade and provides easy access to the nearby Eifel mountains. The community maintains lively local traditions, particularly the Rhenish Carnival, which is a highlight of the local cultural calendar.
