Divided by the Mosel river, Bernkastel-Kues is one of the most celebrated wine towns in Germany, globally recognized for its steep vineyard slopes and the legendary Bernkasteler Doctor vineyard. The historical center on the Bernkastel side is a textbook example of medieval architecture, structured around a cobblestone market square framed by intricate half-timbered houses, most notably the narrow, sharply gabled Spitzhäuschen built in 1416. High above this district stands the ruined Burg Landshut, a 13th-century castle offering sweeping views over the tight loops of the Mosel and the neatly terraced hillsides. On the opposite bank in Kues, the Cusanus-Stift, a late-Gothic hospital complex founded in the 15th century by the scholar Nicholas of Cusa, houses a globally significant historical library and a functioning wine cellar. Wine culture permeates every aspect of the town, from the sprawling vaulted cellars to the annual Weinfest der Mittelmosel, which attracts huge crowds every September. It is a premier starting point for cycling the Moselradweg or taking slow boat tours along the deeply carved river valley.
