Highlights of 2026

1

Set between the metropolises of Hamburg and Lüneburg, Winsen is situated directly on the banks of the Luhe river, blending Northern German small-town tranquility with rich historical architecture. The unmistakable landmark in the center is the Winsen Moated Castle, whose roots stretch all the way back to the thirteenth century. It once served as a residence for the Guelph dukes and continues to impress visitors today with its imposing water moats and massive brick walls. Right next door is the historic Marstall building, the former royal stables which now function as a lively cultural center and museum. A significant milestone for the modern development of the city was hosting the Lower Saxony State Garden Show in 2006. The beautifully designed Luhe gardens created for the event have been permanently preserved, forming a gorgeous recreational area right in the heart of the town. The well-maintained cycle paths through the surrounding Elbe marshes also make it a highly popular destination for day-trippers.
