Ehingen an der Donau is a spirited town in the Alb-Donau district of Baden-Württemberg, widely recognized for its exceptional brewing heritage. Holding the title of a Beer Culture City, it hosts five independent breweries that produce a vast array of traditional beers, making it a unique destination for gourmets. Geographically, the town is tucked away on the southern fringes of the Swabian Alps where the Schmiech stream joins the Danube River. The city's history is deeply intertwined with Further Austria (Vorderösterreich), as it was under Habsburg rule for centuries before becoming part of Württemberg in the early 19th century. This historical legacy is reflected in its elegant architecture and cultural festivals. Today, Ehingen serves as a significant economic hub for the region, balancing its traditional crafts with high-tech industries. The local economy is bolstered by large-scale paper manufacturing and crane production, while the surrounding natural landscape makes it a popular stop for cyclists traveling along the international Danube Cycle Path.
