One of the oldest and largest street festivals in southern Germany, held since 1971 on the last June weekend, with regional cuisine and a varied music programme on several stages in the old town.
Situated gracefully along the banks of the Murr river, Backnang is an animated town in the Stuttgart region that proudly honors its rich industrial past. Historically known as Germany's "leather capital," its heritage as a major tanning and leatherworking center is wonderfully preserved in the Technikforum museum. The scenic historic old town is a delight to explore, featuring an array of beautifully restored half-timbered houses, narrow winding cobblestone streets, and the striking Stiftskirche, a former collegiate church with a prominent Romanesque tower. Every summer, the town comes alive with the legendary Backnanger Straßenfest, one of the oldest and largest street festivals in southern Germany, drawing crowds with live music, local food, and infectious energy. Beyond its bustling center, Backnang serves as a fantastic gateway to the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park. Hikers and cyclists can easily escape into lush forests and serene river valleys, enjoying an excellent blend of cultural heritage and outdoor recreation in a welcoming provincial setting.
