Kasseturm

Kasseturm

The Kasseturm is a significant historic landmark and one of the oldest surviving structures in the cultural city of Weimar, Thuringia. Originally built in the Middle Ages, this distinctive round tower was a crucial component of the former city fortifications, designed to protect the settlement from enemy attacks. Over the centuries, the tower's function evolved dramatically. It notably served as a secure vault for the grand ducal treasury—or "Kasse" (cash box)—which is ultimately how it acquired its current name.

Even Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the literary giant who profoundly shaped Weimar's cultural and political landscape, was involved in managing the finances housed within the tower during his time as a minister. The robust stone masonry, complete with thick defensive walls and narrow, slit-like windows, still serves as a powerful reminder of its military origins and its role as a secure stronghold for the city's wealth.

In the modern era, however, the Kasseturm has found a completely new, vibrant purpose. Since the early 1960s, the building has operated as a student cultural center. It houses Weimar's oldest student club and ranks among the oldest in all of Germany. Spread across several floors, the venue regularly hosts live music concerts, parties, readings, and social gatherings. The tower thus offers a unique atmosphere where Weimar's medieval and classical heritage seamlessly blends with the energetic spirit of its modern university population.
