Marae Hitia'a (French Polynesia)

Weather…

Located on the lush eastern shores of Tahiti, near the mouth of a coastal river, Marae Hitia'a stands as a silent witness to the island's pre-European history and its first contact with France. This sacred stone platform was a focal point for communal rituals and political gatherings in ancient Polynesian society. Its historical fame was cemented in April 1768 when the French navigator Louis-Antoine de Bougainville anchored his ships, the Boudeuse and the Étoile, in the waters nearby. Captivated by the idyllic scenery, Bougainville famously named the region 'New Cythera' after the Greek island of Aphrodite. Today, the basalt structures of the marae offer a glimpse into the traditional architecture of the Society Islands. Visitors can explore the site where the first formal exchanges between Tahitians and French explorers occurred, making it a key location for understanding the early colonial history of French Polynesia.
