Highlights of 2026

An idyllic port town on the Mediterranean coast located between Toulon and Marseille, which has largely preserved its authentic Provençal character. The harbor is widely recognized for its collection of historical pointus, traditional, brightly painted wooden fishing boats that are still actively used by local fishermen today. During the 20th century, the municipality played a crucial role in the history of scuba diving; Jacques Cousteau and Frédéric Dumas tested early autonomous diving equipment in these waters, a legacy now documented in the Musée Frédéric Dumas. Watching over the harbor is the 13th-century Tour Romane, a sturdy remnant of the original medieval defensive fortifications. A short uphill walk leads to the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Pitié, constructed in 1560, offering expansive views across the bay and towards the nearby Bendor island. Prior to the Second World War, Sanary-sur-Mer served as a prominent sanctuary for numerous German-speaking exiled intellectuals and writers, including Thomas Mann and Bertolt Brecht. Every Wednesday morning, the streets surrounding the port transform into one of the largest and most spirited weekly markets in southern France.
