Coulommiers is located in the heart of the fertile Brie plateau in the east of Île-de-France. The town is world-famous for its cheese, Coulommiers, often referred to as the 'little brother of Brie.' The history of the town dates back to Gallo-Roman times, but its strategic importance grew in the Middle Ages under the Counts of Champagne. A significant historical heritage is the Commanderie des Templiers, one of the best-preserved Templar commanderies in northern France. The town is crisscrossed by the Grand Morin river and its numerous canals, earning it the nickname 'Little Venice of the Brie.' These waterways once powered numerous mills and served the tanning industry. Cultural life is enriched by the Parc des Capucins, created on the site of a former monastery and now housing the ruins of an abbey and a museum. Today, Coulommiers is an important administrative and economic center in eastern Seine-et-Marne, while preserving its traditional atmosphere through its famous weekly market and annual cheese and wine fair.
