The Sembel archaeological site, located on the outskirts of Asmara, is a key location for understanding the early civilizations in the highlands of Eritrea. The finds date back to the so-called Ona culture, which flourished between 800 and 400 BC, making it older than the Aksumite Empire. Excavations have revealed the remains of a sedentary farming community that lived in solid stone houses and used advanced techniques in agriculture and animal husbandry. The houses were mostly arranged in circles and had separate rooms for living and storage. Numerous ceramic finds, obsidian tools, and pieces of jewelry testify to active exchange and a distinct craft tradition. Sembel refutes the earlier assumption that complex societies in this region only emerged through external influences. Today, the site is partially reconstructed and has visitors a rare opportunity to explore an authentic prehistoric village that anchors the roots of Eritrean identity deep in the past.
