Los Cóbanos is an appealing coastal village in the Sonsonate region of El Salvador, renowned for its exceptional golden sand beaches and protected marine reserve. Unlike the volcanic black sand beaches common in El Salvador, this area gives a unique tropical escape with crystal-clear waters. Visitors are drawn by the spectacular diving and snorkeling opportunities, as Los Cóbanos is home to the largest rocky reef in the North Pacific. Marine enthusiasts can spot colorful fish, sea turtles, and, during migration season, even humpback whales. The local gastronomy is famous for incredibly fresh seafood, served by the local fishermen in simple yet delicious beachfront restaurants. The village is reachable by car or local bus from the city of Sonsonate, which is about an hour and a half from San Salvador. The best time to enjoy the underwater world and partake in whale-watching tours is during the dry season, specifically from November to March, when the water clarity is at its highest.
