Tucked away further up the coast from El Tunco, El Zonte provides a much more laid-back, intimate coastal experience. It is globally recognized as the birthplace of 'Bitcoin Beach,' a pioneering economic experiment where the local community adopted cryptocurrency for everyday transactions long before it became national tender. Despite its global fame in the financial world, the village has maintained its rugged, earthy charm. Dirt roads, swaying palm trees, and a close-knit community of locals and expats make it a great destination for travelers looking to unplug and immerse themselves in a slower pace of life. The coastline here is dramatic, featuring steep cliffs framing a photogenic bay with both point breaks and beach breaks. Surfers flock to El Zonte for its powerful and hollow right-hand waves that provide thrilling rides, particularly favored by intermediate to advanced surfers. For non-surfers, the town features yoga retreats, spectacular sunset viewing spots, and small coastal eateries serving incredible seafood, fresh coconuts, and the ever-present national dish, the pupusa. El Zonte is located roughly an hour's drive from San Salvador and around 50 minutes from the international airport. It sits along the well-connected Litoral Highway (Carretera Litoral). The prime surfing season aligns with the wet months from May to October, when the swells are most consistent. Travelers looking for sunshine and calmer seas to simply relax on the black sand beach will find the dry season, stretching from November to April, to be well-suited.
