Wadi El Rayan (Egypt)

Weather…

Wadi El Rayan is a unique natural depression in the Faiyum Governorate, consisting of two man-made lakes connected by Egypt's only natural waterfalls. The area was designated a protected natural reserve in 1989 and covers an area of approximately 1,750 square kilometers. The lakes were created in the 1970s by diverting excess agricultural drainage water from the Faiyum Oasis. While the upper lake contains freshwater, the lower lake is significantly more saline due to high evaporation rates. The reserve is a haven for birdwatchers, hosting over 170 species of birds, including rare falcons. Geologically, the region is famous for its rolling sand dunes and striking rock formations, which provide a sharp contrast to the deep blue waters of the lakes. Nearby is the renowned Wadi al-Hitan, where whale fossils dating back millions of years have been discovered. Today, Wadi El Rayan is a popular destination for ecotourism, desert safaris, and various water sports.
